This St Kilda player has booted 50 goals this season and sports a tattooed look to rival Collingwood’s Dane Swan, but chances are you may not recognise her name.

Moana Hope, who plays for the St Kilda Sharks in the Victorian Women’s Football League, kicked 12 goals at the weekend to lead her team to a huge win. It’s all part of what she describes as “a pretty crazy existence”.

“You could write a TV show about my life,” she says. “I take care of my disabled sister and my mum is still unwell. My brother is also in hospital, has been for about six weeks, in the ICU, fighting a virus that the doctors can’t seem to catch.

“It’s just crazy. So footy has always been my [way] out.”

Thankfully, on the field, Moana is having the time of her life. She was also selected to run out for the Western Bulldogs in the first of two AFL women’s games against Melbourne earlier this year.

“I’m enjoying this year for a lot of different reasons,” she says.  “I put a lot of time into my fitness and strength during the off-season.”

There’s another game against Melbourne to come, on August 16, as the curtain-raiser to the men’s game at Etihad Stadium.
