S H A R K B A I T. 2 0 1 4. Issue 1.

S H A R K.  B A I T.  In high demand and after an extensive and very long pre season is back on board for the 2014 season! Here to keep you in the loop on all the ins and outs of the St Kilda Sharks Women’s Football Club.

This season is shaping up to be a kicker!!! With the way pre season looked the club and everyone involved are pumped for a year full of growth, success and constant movement! With each player and coach committing to the cause of #onthemove why would we ever want to be a stagnant unit with no vision or goals?

on-the-move

Although pre season has felt like a million years long it has been a great chance for all the returning and new players to bond and get to know each other and prepare to compete at their full potential! Over the past weekend (May 4th 2014) the Reserves team got their first chance to showcase their skills; fortunately they brought it all together and came home with the first win for the season. The seniors had a Bye but will get their first chance to compete on the 11th May against Melbourne Uni at the Sharks first home of the season.

R E C I P E.  R E V O L U T I O N.  whips up a classic cold and flu remedy….

Chicken and Veggie Soup

35448_l

Ingredients:

  • 800g chicken thigh fillets, fat and sinew removed
  • 1 litre chicken stock
  • 1 sprig of each rosemary and thyme
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium brown onion, cut into large dice
  • 2 celery stalks, cut into large dice
  • 2 carrots, peeled and cut into large dice
  • 1 small kohlrabi, peeled and cut into large dice
  • 1 small celeriac, peeled and cut into large dice
  • 400g canned cannellini beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
  • 12 large fresh basil leaves

 What to do:

Step 1 – Season the chicken with salt and pepper and place them in a large pot with the stock, rosemary, and thyme. Bring to a boil over high heat and, using a spoon or ladle, remove any scum that forms on the surface. Reduce the heat to low and simmer very gently for about 25 minutes, or until the chicken is just cooked through and able to be pulled apart. Set aside for about 10 minutes to allow the mixture to cool slightly. Remove the chicken and strain the broth, discarding the herbs. Gently pull apart the chicken meat into bite-size pieces and set aside.
Step 2 – Quickly rinse and dry out the pot then return the pot to medium heat. Add the olive oil, and then add the onion, celery, carrots, kohlrabi, and celeriac and cook for about 8 minutes, or until they begin to soften. Pour in the reserved chicken broth and simmer the soup for about 20 minutes, or until the vegetables are cooked through. Add the cooked chicken and cannellini beans and simmer 5 minutes longer.
Step 3 – Serve with some fresh toasted bread and warm butter.

  • WARNING: There has been an outbreak of Pink eye around the Sharks so watch out for who you make ‘eye contact’ with! Apparently Smitty got it from kissing a boy….

  • Queen Ann has been spotted trying to impersonate Avril Lavigne while at a recent VWFL event…..On lookers were worried that the VWFL ‘life member’ was going through a mid life crisis as she was skating through the crowd on her skate board while yelling out the cost of current uniform prices!
